COMMUNITY SOLAR

Community Solar Power

As much as you might want to have solar panels installed on your property, this isn’t always an option for some people. Whether you have too small of a roof, an inadequate property layout, or you live in shared housing or a rented property, there are several situations that could keep you from being able to install rooftop solar.

Thankfully, community solar power offers an accessible alternative, ensuring that the shift to clean, renewable energy remains within reach for everyone

How Does Community Solar Power Work?

Community solar power uses large centralized plants or farms where a large array of solar panels are installed. In terms of capacity, community solar farms can typically generate several megawatts of energy, far outpacing the kilowatts of electricity produced by the average household installation.

Community solar uses virtual net metering, in which the households that participate are given net metering credits based on their buy-in to the community solar. This operates similarly to if you had panels installed on your roof. During the day, you can use the energy generated remotely by the community solar farm, while drawing on grid energy at night, reducing your monthly electricity costs.

Access to community solar may be available through either an ownership or subscription model. In ownership, you buy a set number of panels and benefit from them the same as if you had installed them on your property. In the subscription model, you are able to “subscribe” to the community site and receive electricity at a less expensive rate.
