Looking for ways to reduce business energy costs?  You may not think all that much about paying your electric bill every month. And if you do, well, that’s just the cost of doing business, right? Nuh-uh. Take just a moment to consider the energy you’re likely paying for that no one in your office is using, and you’ll definitely want to find smart ways to reduce your business energy costs.

The fact is, depending on the size of your organization and facilities, you can lower your electric bill by thousands of dollars every month by taking a few easy steps to increase the energy efficiency of your offices. Here’s a rundown of the specific tips and simple changes you can make that can add up to short-term and long-term energy savings for your business.

1.  Get an energy audit.

Nothing gets the heart racing like the word “audit”. And while this may not sound like a good thing at first, when it comes to your business energy costs and usage, it really is. Most utility companies offer free business energy audits to their commercial customers. They can help you figure out where your money is going every month, how to increase energy efficiency, and where you can make adjustments to lower your electric bill.

2.  Not in use? Then turn those lights and equipment off.

Turning office machines and lighting off at night can reduce business energy costs.  This one may seem pretty obvious, but you’d be surprised how much juice all those computers, monitors, printers and more consume sitting unused but left on. By making sure they’re in “sleep mode”—or turned off completely—overnight, you won’t be paying for electricity you’re not even using. Make it one of your employees’ nightly routine to take a quick tour of the office and flip the OFF switch on idle equipment. That goes for breakroom devices like microwaves, coffeemakers, radios and TVs, too. Make sure these energy vampires are plugged into a single powerstrip, so they can be turned off all at once on the way out the door.

3.  Take advantage of natural sunlight as often as you can.

Let the sunshine in! Open the blinds around your workspaces to make the best use of daylight—and take advantage of skylights or other natural light sources to reduce your lighting needs during daytime hours. It’s also worthwhile to see if there are areas of your office that are overly lit, and remove lighting that may not be necessary.

4.  Install long-lasting compact fluorescent light (CFL) or light-emitting diode (LED) bulbs.

We all remember the old saying, “The more energy efficient your bulb, the better,” right? Maybe not. But this is one place where saving a little bit in a lot of places can really add up. Look at it this way: replacing a single 60-watt bulb with an 18-watt energy-efficient bulb that’s on for 10 hours a day can easily save a business $1 or more each month. Multiply that out to an entire year—and by the hundreds (if not thousands) of bulbs in your business—and we’re talking some serious savings. Energy-efficient bulbs aren’t just a smart way to lower your electric bill in the short term, their extended service life will help you save in the long-term, too. Energy Star LED light bulbs not only use at least 75% less energy, they can last 50 times longer than the average incandescent—up to 20 years.

5.  Use motion detectors and automatic dimmers that adjust to your needs.

Automatic dimmers, the overhead solution to how to lower your electric bill.  Believe it or not, lighting accounts for almost 20% of the electricity used in U.S. commercial buildings. So being just a bit smarter about when, where and how you use the lighting in your building(s) can add up to big savings. Consider installing motion detectors in hallways, meeting spaces and other places where “always-on” isn’t always needed—and automatic dimming controllers that measure and adjust to the light levels you actually need.

6.  Install programmable thermostats, and use them wisely.

A programmable thermostat gives you the power to automatically adjust the temperature of your workplace when no one’s there, aka most nights, weekends, and holidays. Set yours to turn the AC or heat on 30 minutes before people arrive and off 30 to 60 minutes before they leave rather than being always on (and always adding up). In warmer weather months, it’s a good idea to set your thermostat at no lower than 78 degrees during office hours to reduce energy use. Then, during cooler weather periods, set your thermostats no higher than 68 degrees.

Fun fact: keeping your office temperature just 1 degree down during winters and 1 degree up during summers can reduce the power you use up to 10%. Pretty cool, right?

7.  Keep the heat in (or out) with screens, film and weather-stripping.

While you may think that gentle breeze from your conference room window isn't a big deal, it’s really money and energy flying right out the building. And it's too easy a fix to ignore. Add or replace weather-stripping, caulk or foam around your windows and doors to save energy. Drafts aren't the only way windows can cost you energy and money. Windows let in the sun’s light and heat—which can make it more expensive to cool your office in warmer weather. Luckily, there are plenty of window treatments that can help your business cut down on heat gain and increase energy efficiency, including solar screen window shades, awnings and high-reflectivity window films.

8.  Purchase energy-efficient office equipment.

Learn how to lower your electric bill by taking a commercial energy audit.  When it comes time to buy new office equipment, be sure to look for the Energy Star logo. Energy-Star-labeled computers, monitors, printers, fax machines, scanners and copiers can run much more efficiently, and automatically power down during extended inactivity. That gives you the chance to save 50% or more in energy use on these power-hungry devices. And if your old heater or air conditioner is not working at maximum efficiency, it could draw unnecessary power, which also costs you money. Replace those old heaters and AC units with Energy Star models.

9.  Consider alternative and renewable energy sources to help power your business.

Using commercial renewable energy sources such as solar to power some or all of your business not only can help lower your business energy costs over time, it also generates power that’s free of harmful CO2 emissions and other greenhouse gases. Based on a number of factors, there may never be a better time to invest in solar to get the energy your business needs, and pay less over the long term.

10.  Keep your HVAC systems running smoothly.

Change the filters on your HVAC equipment regularly and make sure to have the units themselves inspected and cleaned as often as recommended. And make sure that areas in front of all vents are clear of furniture and paper. As much as 25% more energy is required to distribute air if your vents are blocked. You can learn how to increase energy efficiency with simple HVAC maintenance.

If you asked many business leaders as few as twenty years ago, “What is energy efficiency and how does it impact your bottom line?”, you probably would have gotten a lot of blank stares. We’ve come a long way since then. And while you may believe your business is already doing its part, there’s always room to increase your energy efficiency and save even more on your electric bill. Finding ways to reduce business energy costs throughout your offices—and using renewable energy sources to generate more of your power—can put your organization in better position to compete and succeed.

Snow Removal for Solar Carports While HelioWing carports are designed to shed snow naturally, heavy accumulation can sometimes occur. Here's how to safely remove snow from your solar carport: Use a Soft-Bristled Brush or Broom: Gently remove snow from the panels using a soft-bristled brush or broom. Avoid using sharp tools or abrasive materials that could scratch or damage the panel surface. Start from the Top: Begin snow removal from the top of the carport and work your way down. This helps prevent snow from accumulating in lower areas and causing excessive weight. Avoid Excessive Force: Use gentle sweeping motions to remove snow. Avoid applying excessive force or pressure that could damage the panels or the carport structure. Consider Professional Assistance: If you're uncomfortable with snow removal or have a large carport, consider hiring a professional service to safely clear the snow. Preventing Snow Damage on Your Solar Carport Here are some additional tips to prevent snow damage and ensure the longevity of your HelioWing carport: Regular Inspections: Inspect your carport regularly for any signs of damage or wear and tear. Address any issues promptly to prevent further problems. Winter brings its own challenges for electric vehicle (EV) owners, especially when it comes to charging. Cold temperatures can affect your EV's battery performance and charging efficiency. But don't worry! With a few proactive measures and smart charging habits, you can optimize your winter EV charging experience and keep your battery happy and healthy. Understanding Winter EV Charging Challenges Cold temperatures impact your EV battery in a few ways: Reduced Range: Lithium-ion batteries, commonly used in EVs, are sensitive to temperature changes. In colder weather, the chemical reactions within the battery slow down, reducing its capacity and overall range. Slower Charging: Similarly, cold temperatures affect the charging speed of your EV. The battery's internal resistance increases in the cold, making it harder to accept a charge quickly. Increased Battery Strain: Frequent charging in cold temperatures puts additional strain on the battery, potentially accelerating its degradation over time. Winter EV Charging Tips Here are some practical tips to optimize your EV charging during the winter months: Pre-condition Your Battery: Many EVs offer a pre-conditioning feature that warms up the battery before you start driving or charging. This significantly improves battery performance and charging efficiency in cold weather. Charge More Frequently: Instead of waiting for your battery to deplete significantly, consider charging more frequently, especially during extremely cold spells. This can help maintain a higher battery temperature and reduce strain. Utilize Smart Charging Features: Take advantage of smart charging features that allow you to schedule charging during off-peak hours or when electricity rates are lower. Some chargers also offer pre-conditioning options. Park in a Warmer Location: If possible, park your EV in a garage or covered area to protect it from the elements and maintain a more stable battery temperature. Keep Your Battery Charged: Avoid letting your EV battery completely discharge in cold weather, as this puts additional stress on it. Aim to keep your battery charged above 20% whenever possible. Sunrise Solar: Your Partner in EV Charging Solutions Sunrise Solar and Smartech Electrical offer a range of EV charging solutions designed to optimize your charging experience in all seasons. As the days grow shorter and temperatures drop, you might wonder how your solar panels will fare in the winter months. The good news is that solar panels still generate electricity in cold weather and even in snowy conditions. However, taking measures to winterize your solar panels helps ensure optimal performance and maximize energy production throughout the season. Solar Panel Efficiency in Cold Weather Contrary to popular belief, solar panels actually perform better in colder temperatures. While sunlight is essential for generating electricity, excessive heat reduces a solar panel's efficiency. Colder temperatures help keep panels operating at their optimal temperature range, leading to increased energy production. Snow and Solar Panels: What You Need to Know Snow cover can temporarily obstruct sunlight from reaching your solar panels, reducing energy output. However, most solar panels are designed with a smooth, angled surface that allows snow to slide off naturally. Additionally, the dark color of the panels absorbs sunlight and generates heat, which helps melt snow accumulation. Winterizing Your Solar Panels While solar panels generally perform well in winter, taking a few proactive steps can help maintain optimal efficiency: Regular Monitoring: Keep an eye on your solar panel system's performance during the winter months. Monitor your energy production to identify any significant drops that might indicate snow accumulation or other issues. Snow Removal (If Necessary): If heavy snow accumulation persists and significantly impacts energy production, you may need to carefully remove snow from your panels. Use a soft-bristled brush or broom to gently remove snow without scratching the panel surface. Avoid using hot water or harsh chemicals, as these can damage the panels. Professional Inspection: Consider scheduling a professional inspection of your solar panel system before winter arrives. This helps identify any potential issues and ensures your system is ready for the colder months. Sunrise Solar: Your Partner in Winter Solar Performance Sunrise Solar is your trusted source for solar energy solutions in all seasons. Our team of experts provides guidance on winterizing your solar panels and addresses any concerns you may have about their performance in cold weather.
